A Quick Guide to Remembary
Remembary is a personal diary for the iPad that also connects to Twitter, Facebook, and RSS feeds - it can help you remember what happened, especially if you get a few days behind in your diary.
Writing and Getting Around
Tap anywhere on the page to write your text, and you can put as much as you want into each day's entry. Swipe up and down to scroll through longer entries.
Move between dates by tapping on either side of the page or swiping to the left or right. Tapping on the date at the top lets you jump to any date.
Remembary uses a split view, just like iPad mail: a searchable list of diary entries shows up on the left side (in landscape mode) or when you tap the Calendar icon (the far left of the top bar in portrait mode).
Just underneath the date is a summary field. Tapping on it lets you enter a short description for your day - this description shows up in the date listing and is also searchable.
If you're writing a diary entry for today, a 'clock' icon appears in the right margin. Tap it to add a timestamp to the bottom of today's entry. If you have an iPad with a camera, a 'camera' button also appears, letting you take a picture or video from inside Remembary.
Daily Context
What makes Remembary different from other diary apps is how it automatically provides context for each day, with images, maps, your Twitter feed, Facebook statuses, and RSS. These are accessed through three buttons at the top of the page (note that they only appear if there is something for them to show).
The 'arrows' button brings up a list of all of the tweets / status updates / feed items for that day. Tapping on any item opens it up in a browser. Tapping on 'Edit' at the top of the list lets you delete items you don't want anymore. These items are colour-coded: blue for Facebook, light blue for Twitter, and yellow for RSS. If any of your Tweets have location information, a 'location' icon will appear in the Tweet box.
Tapping on any item in this list will show the content in a popup browser. Tapping on the 'X' button at the top right closes the browser popup.
The 'pictures' button brings up a list of all pictures and videos in your iPad's photo library that have the current date. Each thumbnail includes the time the picture was taken. If the picture has location information, a 'location' icon appears in the box too.
Tapping on any picture or video will let you see it in full screen. You can watch videos and zoom around pictures. You can use the "<" ">" arrows at the top left to loop through the other pictures for that day.
The 'map' button brings up a map with all of the day's pictures (red pins) or tweets (purple pins) with location information. Use the standard pinch/swipe motions to move around the map. Tapping on a Tweet pin shows you what was said. Tapping on a picture shows a thumbnail - tapping again brings it up in full screen.
Note: If you're not seeing pictures or maps, check this blog post for ways to set up your iPad properly.
Toolbar Buttons
Tapping on the gear icon at the top lets you give your diary a name and set a password.
Tapping on the arrows icon at the top lets you specify your feeds. You can enter your Twitter name and up to five RSS feeds from things like blogs, Flickr, and news sites. You can also authenticate with Facebook to have Remembary include your Status updates for each day.
Tapping on the palette icon lets you pick from different artist-designed themes for your diary.
Tapping on the big 'A' icon lets you pick from different fonts or change the font size. Tapping on the font size buttons multiple times can make the text very big or very small.
Tapping on the export button lets you export your diary - all of it, or a specific day, month, or year. You can send your backup in an email or sync with DropBox.
Tapping on the '?' icon at the right side of the toolbar brings up a list of outside links to the Remembary Website, the support/feedback form, Remembary's Twitter and Facebook pages, and the App Store. Follow and/or "Like" Remembary, ask a question, or sign up for the helpful dairy starter email plan. You can also email Remembary support directly from here.
